Them: We COULD hire someone who isn't exactly the same as the tech bros we have now, but we need to keep raising the technical bar!

Me (silently): You mean the same one you tripped over on your way in?

This same VP...

"Supply chain technology is just java messaging services, it's not that hard"

Out of nowhere in a meeting apropos of absolutely nothing "Hold on guys, how does Cloudwatch factor into this?" <record scratch>

His first official act as VP was to call all the teams tomeetings to walk through their code with him. Every E1 and intern walked out of those meetings knowing 2 things.

1. This guy's an unbeleivable prick.

2. This guy hasn't learned anything about coding in at least 15 years.

Nailed it!

I think people would be surprised how fxcked up most tech companies are. I worked for a GIS company that is a complete mess. They only survive from earmark contracts and bullying. But the hidden downside is crappy code which is highly vulnerable.

Can confirm... I've had the luxury of working in highly innovative market leading late stage startups and fashion retail hereditary oligarchy and the executive psychopathy is prevalent in both environments but retail tech is a Thunderdome of waste, abuse, and leadership incompetence.

IMO, Yup - Tech companies can afford to be even more effed up than most other companies because at the end of the day, as long as they have in some distant past achieved a modicum of Market Fit, the ROI on incremental development can be low or even negative for a LOOONG time before anyone notices - a few home runs carries the rest, so why care about the rest.

Yes when Microsoft has near-monopoly power and billions in assets they can shit the bed for a loooong time without any real consequences.
